Digital Diagnostics provides diagnostic services for the detection of diabetic retinopathy (including macular edema). Digital Diagnostics is enrolled in the Medicare Program to provide and bill for these services as an Independent Diagnostic Testing Facility (IDTF).

Digital Diagnostics is a fixed location IDTF under the general supervision of a qualified ophthalmologist and retina specialist with a Certified Ophthalmic Technician on staff.

LumineticsCore™ (formerly known as IDx-DR) was the first fully autonomous AI in any specialty of medicine to be cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to diagnose diabetic retinopathy (including macular edema) after rigorous FDA validation for safety and equity.

What is an IDTF?

An IDTF is a facility that provides diagnostic tests independent of either a physician’s office or a hospital.

To date, Digital Diagnostics is the only IDTF under the Medicare Program that provides diagnostic services for the detection of diabetic retinopathy (including macular edema).  Digital Diagnostic’s service provided by LumineticsCore (formerly known as IDx-DR) was designed to support the PCMH and practitioners who care for patients with diabetes.  The eye exam for diabetes is an important part of comprehensive diabetes management. The FDA determined that LumineticsCore (formerly known as IDx-DR) met the standards for “breakthrough device” designation in accordance with section 3051 of the 21st Century Cures Act.

As an IDTF, Digital Diagnostics adheres to the Medicare Independent Diagnostic Performance Standards.  These standards (42 C.F.R section 410.33) can be found at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Website.

Please Meet Our Team!

Aaron Roller, MD

Ophthalmologist

Dr. Aaron Roller joined the Digital Diagnostics team in 2021 as Medical Supervisor for the Austin diagnostic testing facility. He and his family have been in Austin, TX since 2012, where he pursues his passion as a retina subspecialist in private practice. His relationship with Digital Diagnostics dates back to his ophthalmology residency and retina subspecialty training at the University of Iowa from 2007-2012, where he trained under the close mentorship of Dr. Abramoff, the company founder and visionary for implementation of artificial intelligence into healthcare screening. Dr. Roller was involved in data collection and algorithm training during the early implementation of AI in the infancy of what was then known as IDx, which would grow into Digital Diagnostics in years ahead. He remembers being inspired by Dr. Abramoff’s vision and the potential for development of AI diagnostics, and he feels honored and fortunate to have the opportunity to reunite with and contribute again to the evolution of this paradigm-changing project. After years of caring for thousands of central Texas patients with severe vision loss from advanced diabetic retinopathy, Dr. Roller is passionate about the potential of artificial intelligence to reduce the burden of vision loss from diabetes and other preventable diseases.
