Why
Screen For Mental Disorders?

 Approximately 20% of
medical patients suffer from mental disorders. A recent study showed that 5–9% of patients in primary care
settings suffer from depression alone, and up to 50% of these cases
go undetected and untreated. Patients with mental disorders:
- Suffer needlessly
- Have poorer medical outcomes
- Contribute to rising healthcare costs
- Cost employers $17 billion in lost workdays each
year
Because psychiatric symptoms resemble those of many
organic illnesses, physicians often spend valuable time
trying to rule out medical causes that do not exist.
